Lewis Hamilton wants to sort his future with McLaren over the summer break
By Jonathan Noble   Monday, July 16th 2012, 09:26 GMT

Lewis Hamilton wants to settle his Formula 1 future with McLaren over the summer break - because he feels that would be the best time to make the most sensible decision.

Ahead of what will be a key decision for his future with his contract running out later this year, Hamilton insists that current frustrations with the competitiveness of his McLaren team would not play the decisive factor in what he does - although he admits that the priority is to keep on winning.

With options at Red Bull Racing and Ferrari appeared to be closed off, Hamilton's main options for 2013 appear to be recommitting to McLaren or moving to Mercedes if the outfit is left searching for another driver should Michael Schumacher elect not to continue.

In an exclusive interview with the Russian news agency R-Sport in Moscow at the weekend, where he was participating in a street demonstration, Hamilton said that talks with McLaren would open soon - despite having said as recently as the Canadian Grand Prix that he could wait until the winter.

"We haven't sat down and discussed anything yet but I'm sure over the summer break, when we have the summer break, it would be nice to get something in place," he said. "That would be a time when we can be more relaxed and make the most sensible decision for the future."

When asked about the factors that would influence his decision, Hamilton said: "To be honest, you have to base your decisions on much, much longer than such a short period of time.

"Only half a year cannot decide six years of partnership, or actually 13 years of partnership. I've been with them since I was 13, so it's 14 years, so it's much more than these small details, it's a much, much bigger picture."

He added: "There are lots of things to take into account. These people have supported me; these are the people that got me into Formula 1. But, you know, I want to win.

"I'm not that young any more so I want to make sure that whatever I do I make the right decision so I can maximize my career, you know. I just need to make sure that I'm winning. That's what I exist for, that's what I train and work for every day."

Looking at this season, Hamilton still saw plenty of opportunity for success - and pinned his hopes on upgrades due to be arriving for this weekend's German GP.

"I've been ready all year to win. We should have won a lot more races than we have, but there are many more races to go. We still have a lot more chances to get some wins and I think it's possible.

"Up until now we've not developed as fast as other people. Other people have brought some more upgrades in the past than we have, but we have a big upgrade coming for the next race, so let's hope that it does the job and gets us in a fighting position."

McLaren  be  my mirror, my sword and shield, my missionaries in a foreign field.
McLaren rules the world.

Whitmarsh expects Hamilton to stay
McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh is confident that Lewis Hamilton will sign a new long-term contract with the team.

Hamilton's current deal comes to an end this year and there has been great speculation that the former World Champion will look to leave the team he has been associated with since his was a teenager.

McLaren have been a step behind Red Bull and Ferrari of late and Hamilton indicated earlier in the week that while loyalty counted for a lot, winning was what he raced for and as such, he wants a car capable of winning.

"There are lots of things to take into account. These people have supported me; these are the people that got me into Formula One," he told R-Sport.

"But, you know, I want to win. I'm not that young any more so I want to make sure that whatever I do I make the right decision so I can maximise my career, you know. I just need to make sure that I'm winning.

"That's what I exist for, that's what I train and work for every day."

Whitmarsh says he expects the 27-year-old to extend his stay with the team and that a few bad races will not change how he views McLaren.

"I'm expecting that we will," Whitmarsh said during a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes phone-in.

"Lewis has been a member of this team for a long time. We have been concentrating on a season - I think there's been more speculation, more concern, more interest in this situation in the media than perhaps within the team or in Lewis' mind. We appear nowadays to be asked questions about it but I don't think it occupies as much time in our minds as it does in column inches.

"I don't [think poor form could harm McLaren's chances of retaining Hamilton], because we're going to the next two races trying to win as we go to every race, and I think Lewis is more intelligent than that and I would hope so is most of the media."

Diciamo che se sono intenzionati a vincere le prossime gare devono dimostrare una competitività che ultimamente sembra latitare. :-hlp Mi sembra quasi di vederlo mentre dice queste parole, tutto sorridente e scodinzolante. :-hlp

'Webber deal is Hamilton's loss'
Hamilton short of options after Webber decides to stay at Red Bull

Sky Sports F1's Ted Kravitz has described Mark Webber's contract extension with Red Bull as "the biggest disappointment" of Lewis Hamilton's already-faltering season.

After months of speculation about his future, Webber announced two days after taking victory at Silverstone that he would be staying at Red Bull for the 2013 season. With Sebastian Vettel also under contract for next season, Webber's decision to reject overtures from Ferrari effectively blocks the way for Hamilton to join the World Champions and leaves the 2008 World Champion short of options as he considers whether or not to sign an extension of his own with McLaren.

"Webber signing for Red Bull must have been the biggest disappointment of the season for Lewis Hamilton because he fancied getting into the car that Sebastian Vettel is doing so well in," Ted told Sky Sports News. "Lewis thinks he is the equal of Sebastian Vettel, if not better than Vettel, so he believes he could win championships easily in the Red Bull car. So for him it is very disappointing that Webber took that seat.

"Where can he go now? Lotus maybe, Mercedes if Schumacher goes, but the options are drying up for him. But you can never tell with Lewis Hamilton. He might decide the grass is greener somewhere else. He has been at McLaren all his career and maybe he needs a bit of a break to just reset his mind - and certainly Lotus would give him that."

Hamilton's perceived disappointment at Webber's extension has been compounded by McLaren's severe loss of form, with the MP4-27 arguably no better than the fifth-fastest car at Silverstone two weeks ago. Such a lowly status represents a dramatic fall from grace for a charger that Hamilton guided to pole position for the season-opening Australian GP. According to Kravitz, however, that early-season advantage may have been dangerously deceptive.

"I think what is true is that McLaren have squandered their early season advantage They had a car that was fast, but then that was because all the other teams were having problems," the F1 Show presenter reflected. "Red Bull were still trying to understand the rule changes, Ferrari had a very slow car at the start of the season that only now they have managed to improve and Mercedes weren't really on the pace either. So I think it was more that all the other teams were slow, that made McLaren fast.

Remote Record
"They haven't developed the car as much as they would like, or as much as Hamilton would like. But this is the time to do it because they need to save their season."

After enduring a wretched weekend at Silverstone, McLaren are pinning their hopes of a return to the front of the grid on a suite of upgrades which will be introduced this weekend. The changes to the MP4-27 are "quite noticeable" according to team boss Martin Whitmarsh but, speaking after patrolling the Hockenheim pitlane on Thursday afternoon, Kravitz confirmed that the upgrades weren't yet apparent.

"They aren't on the car at the minute," Ted reported. "We are expecting to see new sidepods. Something more akin to a jetfighter, with perhaps channels down the side to funnel the air down the bottom of the car to the diffuser.

"Whether the team have them made in time and get them to Germany in time for free practice we will have to see."

:-ahah
