Prize for study of Woking's Italian community

The first ever study of the Italian community in Woking has won its author an academic prize.

Gabriella Perri won the Christie Prize for best Italian dissertation at Royal Holloway, University of London, from where she graduated in the summer 2001.

A second-generation Italian, whose parents come from Calabria, Miss Perri and her brother Gianfranco Perri were born and raised in Woking. After attending St. John the Baptist school, both siblings won places at Royal Holloway, University of London to study Italian. Gianfranco is now in his final year.

Miss Perri's dissertation is entitled 'The Anglo-Italian Community in Woking: work and education, religion, culture and society.' Through her study, she found that while the Italian migrant families have successfully integrated into the Woking area over the last half-century, they maintain many Italian traditions and have a great sense of pride and attachment to their mother country.

Miss Perri says: "Italian cultures, traditions and ways of being that existed in Italy forty years ago are still evident in the Italian community of Woking. This is due to the strong hold Italians have over their Patria and their dialect. The most ironic thing I have found is that Italian immigrants feel more Italian, more patriotic towards their country, than Italians in Italy."

Miss Perri has been employed as a bilingual telephone interviewer in Market Research for Morpace International Ltd, since October 1996. She worked on a full time basis both for a Gap year and during several University vacations as well as part time out of hours during term time, and continues to work there now she has graduated.

Gabriella's ambition, is to further her research into Italian immigration - maybe write a book - be the next Terri Colpi! She says: "I would like to concentrate, first and foremost on the Italian community of Woking; not only for personal reasons, but because the Italians count as one of the largest ethnic minority groups in the area and have very little historical and factual information on their heritage. The research would hopefully be a point of referral for the generations to come and for the local community - who want to amplify their knowledge and understanding of their neighbours' different culture and society. It would be a recognition off the hard work and suffering borne by Italian migrants for a better life and help subsequent generations who go in search of their roots."

From a young age Miss Perri has always been fascinated about Italian immigration, as her parents left Calabria in search of work and prosperity. This led her to research the great Italian phenomenon and to dedicating her dissertation to something which is part of her everyday life.

NOTES TO EDITORS

The Italian community in Woking dates back to the post World War II era, though the boom period for immigration was the late 1960s. The principal reason for Italian settlement in Woking was for work purposes - as for most UK Italian communities that were established after WWII. Most migrants came from a small town in Sicily called Mussomeli. The majority of men worked in agriculture, while many women worked in hospitals. To this day, the main area of employment for men is gardening. Men and women also moved on from agriculture to work in factories in and around Woking, including Lion Works, Britax, Blue Prince and Ashley Cook.

1962 Trovato and Son - first Italian food shop opened - and as the community began to expand, others followed, establishing stores specifically aimed at Italians, and also for the wider Woking community - barbers, restaurants, bars and ice cream vendors - which contributed to the integration of the Italian community.

The Italian church has been a focus for Woking's Italian community. One of the many trips it organises is the annual pilgrimage to Aylesford in Kent, on the second Sunday of June. All the Italian communities across the country meet up for the day and celebrate mass, share food and wine and follow a procession together. Unlike other Italian communities in the UK Woking did not have a patron saint. However, in 2000 La Madonna dei Miracoli, patron saint of Mussomeli in Sicily was chosen to represent the community.

In the 1980s a significant number of Italians returned to Italy, having achieved financial security. Many second and third generation Italians have continued the businesses established by their forebears. However, others are staying in school for longer, going into higher education and following careers in non-traditional occupations. The majority of second and third generation study Italian at school, showing their dedication to their parent's language and culture
