Push The Button
Jenson Button commits to McLaren for one more year - sparking scrap for his services in 2015
It had been thought the 33-year-old would sign a three or four year contract with the Woking-based team

New deal: Jenson Button has signed a one year extension with McLaren
Jenson Button will be the most wanted man in Formula 1 after signing a new ONE YEAR deal with McLaren.

The revelation came as the Woking operation landed the coup of the year yesterday in luring design genius Peter Prodromou from champions Red Bull.Until now it was thought Button would sign a three or four year contract at McLaren with options that would take him closer to the end of his sparkling career. But the deal signed months ago, and set to be announced soon, is for 2014 alone. And a scrap is sure to ensue for the 33-year-old's services in 2015.Level-headed Button is seen as the only top driver who can work with any of his rivals.Sources at Red Bull and Ferrari admit the Brit is on their wanted list, while at the end of next year all the top teams will be in a state of flux over their driver line-up.Red Bull are waiting to see how new boy Daniel Ricciardo performs.
And Ferrari have cast an eye over Button yet again because they are by no means certain the Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso partnerhsip will make a second season.Lotus rate him highly too and Lewis Hamilton would certainly work with him again at Mercedes.
Button was written off by many experts when he joined Hamilton at McLaren but ended up scoring more points than the 2008 champion in their three years together.

Yet Woking's latest coup in poaching Prodromou, 44, has made them a tempting option for any top racer. The former head of aero at McLaren has been a pivotal figure in designing the Red Bull cars that have dominated F1 for much of the last four years. He has been the right hand man to much-admired designer Adrian Newey for more than a decade. Now his move will make him the highest paid design man in F1 after Newey and Ross Brawn."It's great news," said Button."McLaren have had great years, scored wins and come close to winning the world championship while I've been here.

"This has not been a great year for us, but the people already working within this team are still doing a mega job and it's nice we are adding to their skills. It's going to help us a lot in the future."Prodromou is one of the 'headline-making signings' Martin Whitmarsh talked about in Korea. And McLaren are currently involved in talks with Red Bull to buy an early release from his current contract which lasts until 2015.

Champion Sebastian Vettel was stunned by the news yesterday in Japan. He said: "He's obviously been a very strong character in the background, responsible for a lot of good stuff."I hope he stays with us," he added unaware Prodromou is already on his way to Woking.McLaren's Jonathan Neale said: "It's the first of a series of moves we are making over the coming weeks."Though Hamilton could breathe easier as Neale said they are not in talks to lure Brawn from Mercedes."We are not having conversations with Ross Brawn," he said.
